Africa’s Food Security: What Recent UN Data Reveals About Hunger Trends

The latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report reveals global hunger rates declined slightly in 2024; however, hunger continued to rise in parts of Africa and western Asia. FAO and partner agencies reported that more than 307 million people in Africa faced chronic undernourishment — a rate surpassing 20% in many countries. While some regions showed progress due to enhanced agricultural productivity and targeted food programs, economic pressures, climate shocks, and conflict continue to worsen food access for many vulnerable populations. Experts warn that without coordinated efforts to support resilient food systems and social safety nets, achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger by 2030 will remain out of reach. Strategies prioritizing smallholder support, climate-smart agriculture, and improved market integration were highlighted as key pathways forward.
