Nigeria Records 3,245MW Renewable Energy Capacity in Q3 2019

The report, published through the Africa Energy Portal, revealed that the country achieved an installed renewable energy capacity of 3,245 megawatts (MW) across solar, wind, hydro, and biomass technologies during the quarter.

Operational renewable energy output for the period reached 2,110 gigawatt-hours (GWh), highlighting the increasing role of clean energy sources in supporting Nigeria’s electricity generation needs.

One of the most notable achievements recorded during the quarter was the avoidance of approximately 1.42 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions through renewable energy generation. Energy analysts say this reflects Nigeria’s growing contribution to global climate action and carbon-reduction efforts.

The report further identified Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) technology as the top-performing renewable energy source during the quarter, accounting for 48 percent of total renewable electricity generation nationwide.

In another major development, a 50MW Solar Farm located in Kano State was officially commissioned in August 2019, adding new momentum to the country’s renewable infrastructure expansion and supporting government efforts to diversify the national energy mix.

Industry stakeholders believe the real-time renewable energy dashboard introduced by Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading PLC represents a significant milestone for energy transparency and data-driven decision-making in Africa’s power sector.

The platform aggregates, validates, and analyzes renewable generation statistics, project performance data, and carbon accounting information to support policymakers, investors, environmental agencies, and energy sector operators.

Experts say improved access to reliable renewable energy data could help attract more investments into Nigeria’s clean energy sector while accelerating sustainable development and energy transition initiatives across the country.

As African nations increasingly pursue cleaner, more sustainable energy systems, Nigeria’s latest renewable energy performance indicators demonstrate the country’s commitment to expanding green power generation and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
